I’m a geology student and hobby computer programmer based in the UK and while geology is my biggest passion, I’m also interested in many other parts of the STEM and media world, such as broadcast engineering, graphic design and sustainable energy.

As a child I always wanted to be some kind of tech magnate - the next Big Tech CEO, if you will - but come the end of my high school years I had realised that I did not want to make computer science into a job, and I certainly didn’t want to become some miserable tech gal. Thankfully around this time I discovered my local college offered a geology course, and it was at this point that I set out on pursuing a career in the earth sciences.

I’m learning a lot and I’m still not entirely sure what kind of career I want to go into, but my immediate plan is to study an undergraduate master’s degree in the subject so that I can take my interest even further.

I plan to post about my future geological endeavors on this website, and maybe the occasional programming project. I’ll also make a post on my Bluesky page every time I publish a new article. If you want more informal posts or to talk to me about my blog posts, you can follow me there.

Answers

• Favourite rock?
  Gabbro, it’s a lovely colour and makes up one of my favourite mountain ranges in the UK. If I had to pick a second choice I’d go with Oolitic limestone. Both can be found in the UK!

• Pronouns?
  My pronouns are she/her, but I don’t mind people using they/them. I also have a Pronouns Page.

• Programming software?
  I use Microsoft’s VSCode for almost all my programming projects, with the exception of IntelliJ IDEA for Java projects. I very much dislike how AI-oriented both code editors have become.

• Operating system?
  My current PC is running Windows 11 (ew) and I plan to use Linux with KDE on my new laptop. My previous ThinkPad ran a very out of date version of Windows 10.

• Coffee or Tea?
  Neither. I refuse to elaborate.

About this website

The previous iterations of this personal website were big projects on their own; each one I made completely from the ground up using some variation of a Static Site Generator (SSG) and Tailwind CSS (the very first of my personal websites was mashed together with ChatGPT and expectedly looked rubbish, but I wouldn’t even dream of using AI to do any programming nowadays).

These were great, but all of them had one thing in common: I’d spend days making them perfect, only to write one blog post and abandone them forever. Probably because I didn’t have that much motivation to work on them or write new posts as I had no custom domain apart from the branded one the website hosting platform gave me.

This website is far simpler: it’s built with the Hugo SSG and uses a modified version of the Hugo Bear Blog theme with my own colours and some new fonts (namely Solway and Cabin) so that I can actually focus on writing stuff.
